2009 toyota corolla review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger and roomier. introductionthe 2009 toyota corolla is a new car, the 10th generation of the world's most popular passenger car. More than 30 million have been sold in more than 140 different countries. It feels more like a small car than an econobox, as much a smaller camry as anything else. Upgrading to the corolla le includes power windows and door locks. Finally, there are two sportier models, the corolla s which looks the part and has some seat and chassis upgrades, and the corolla xrs which brings a bigger engine, brakes, and tires to the party.  no matter the model, the toyota corolla is a hop-in-and-go kind of car. The standard model, simply called corolla, is the least expensive yet includes fabric upholstery, air conditioning, cd/wma/mp3 xm-ready radio, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, six-way manual driver seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, outside temperature gauge, power mirrors, and engine immobilizer. Six airbags and abs are standard. Options are the same as the standard, plus 16-inch alloy wheels and remote keyless entry.  xle is the lux-like corolla, and builds on le with 16-inch steel wheels and covers, wood grain trim, optitron instruments, variable intermittent wipers, sliding lid center console, keyless entry, seatback pockets and better radio. The option list swells to include those above not standard, plus moonroof, alloy wheels, eight-speaker jbl audio system, and navigation, though the latter two can not be combined.  the s is the economy sporting model, with color-matched spoilers, fog lamps, black headlight housings, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and sport front seats the upgrades from the base model. Options are extensive and include everything mentioned for standard, le, xle, and leather upholstery.  xrs is the top of the line. It's upgraded with the 2. 4-liter engine, wider, 17-inch tires on alloy wheels, electronic stability control, trunk spoiler, rear disc brakes, strut tower brace, optitron gauges, cruise, leather shifter and steering wheel, and chrome interior accents. Heated mirrors, two radio upgrades, navigation, power locks/windows, moonroof, and leather upholstery are among the options.  safety features that come standard on all corolla models include six airbags: dual frontal, front side-impact (for torso protection), and side curtain airbags (for head protection). Electronic stability control and traction control are optional and we recommend getting them. The light housings are the most similar, driven by both styling heritage and modern safety standards, the shoulders over the wheel openings are more pronounced, and the roofline as it drops behind the rear door is more formal. However, it's immediately recognizable as a toyota, and from behind as a corolla.  messing with success is difficult, so after selling more than 30 million corollas around the world toyota kept the update conservative. Others will appreciate the simple lines. Those same simple lines help keep collision repair prices from extremes, which means lower insurance rates.  both the s and xrs receive different lower nose and tail sections, the area around the fog lamps bearing a distant similarity to the lexus is, and trunk spoilers. It's a look that works better on the xrs by virtue of its larger wheels. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated. Fit and finish both appear to a high level for such an inexpensive car.  the basis for the corolla also forms the base of the matrix, and the all-new 2009 pontiac vibe. The corolla is within a few inches of most of its competitors, the mistubishi lancer being among the longer and the honda civic amongst the shorter. Nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger, but the nissan versa is as likely to face off against lesser-priced corolla models. interiorwith such a large audience, the 2009 toyota corolla skips the fringes and focuses on a pleasant interior designed more to offend no one than to excite just a few. Hop in and everything seems rental car simple without the all-too-frequent guilt that comes from not popping for an upgrade from this week's special. As one example, the cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing.  materials and patterns are understated, speaking to the practical side without ignoring basic needs for tactile comfort, and they vary appropriately by model. The wood grain trim on the xle adds warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony. We're surprised that the leather upholstery option, available on the s and xrs models with their sport seats, is not offered on the xle, especially since some competitors like honda's civic do. On the other hand, the other trims aren't subject to glare reflections that the faux wood is.  a conventional dash frames speed and engine revs with fuel and ancillary data, the xle and xrs employing electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Front seats mix comfort and ease of entry and egress nicely, though the sporting models' heavier bolsters will be appreciated by anyone not shopping at the big 'n tall store. Space of 12. 3 cubic foot is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. G6 also gets 17-inch five-spoke, high-vent wheels for 2007, and a standard interior rearview electrochromic mirror with compass display. New exterior color options for 2007 include blue-gold crystal metallic and dark gray steel metallic.  the mission of the pontiac g6 is to beat the honda accord, nissan altima and mazda6 on value, a proposition bolstered by lower prices. While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. Standard features on the special value model 17,245) include air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, am/fm/cd player, variable intermittent wipers, tachometer, theft-deterrent system, and 16-inch steel wheels with 215/60r16 tires. The base model 18,800) adds cruise control, remote keyless entry and 17-inch steel wheels with 225/50r17 tires.  the gt sedan 22,380), gt coupe 22,150), and gt convertible 28,750) come standard with a 3. 5-liter v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. Option packages are available to personalize the car.  safety features that come on all models include driver and passenger front airbags (the passenger side airbag features occupant detection) and seatbelts with pretensioners. New standard safety features for 2007 are side-impact air bags and head curtain airbags for g6 sedan and coupe models. Anti-lock brakes packaged with traction control are standard on gt and gtp models (optional on base models). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. walkaroundthe pontiac g6 models are attractive cars. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. In fact, the g6 led this latest pontiac styling revolution. Its clean, uncluttered lines are quite pleasing.  instead of side cladding, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid.  gtp models look similar to the gts, but with a spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is relatively dull-looking.  the coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight.  these measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away with a little familiarity and the g6 becomes a happy companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in shoulder and hip room. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels.  the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that allows every owner to use the sound system's features, and to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy, intuitive and fun to use. The audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open. We found it works exceptionally well, powering up or down with the press of a button. Hold the button down after it's done and the windows will power up or down appropriately.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. The trunklid on the convertible was heavy and relatively hard to lift open. driving impressionthe pontiac g6 is fun to drive and quite pleasant for cruising around. We found the sedan, coupe and convertible models reasonably quiet around town.

Der beetle becomes a lightning bug. introductionvolkswagen has kicked its retro-fad car into high gear with the introduction of a new beetle turbo s. That sounds like more than a mere nostalgia car. Technically, competitors will include its cousin, the audi tt, its stablemates, the golf gti, and, in some circles, other retro-mobiles like the pt cruiser, the thunderbird and the mini. But the newest beetle's unique looks and stand-out performance make it a species apart.  the rest of the beetle line continues to turn heads, however, and 2002 brings special color editions in riviera blue and pastel green; snap orange, double yellow, and cyber green come with special seats, trim, and wheel inserts. Very cool. lineupsix models of the new beetle are available: gl; gls 2. 0l; gls tdi; gls 1. 8t; glx, and the new turbo s.  gl 15,900) and gls 2. 0l 16,850) are powered by volkswagen's 115-horsepower 2. 0-liter engine.  gls tdi 17,900) uses a 90-horsepower 1. 9-liter turbocharged diesel engine.  the 1. 8t comes with a 150-horsepower turbocharged 1. 8-liter engine. A few even flash the peace sign.  the turbo s looks similar to the other new beetles, but aerodynamic enhancements give it a hunkered-down german turbo look. Smoothed-out wheel wells and revised bumpers give it a seamless, aerodynamic appearance. Double exhaust pipes hint of compressed aspiration under the hood, while special 17-inch alloy wheels and tires indicate a sports suspension. A subtle turbo s badge, styled after porsche badging, adorns the back hatch on which sits a rear valance. Beetle turbo s is available in three basic colors: black, red and silver. The metallic silver is available at no extra charge, and a dark platinum gray will be added to the palette early in 2003.  new colors for the rest of the beetle line include platinum grey, snap orange, and riviera blue. Marlin blue will replace batik blue; blue lagoon will replace techno blue; double yellow will replace yellow; and reflex silver will replace silver arrow.  all beetles look creative and distinctive and spare. Quality is excellent. Gaps between doors, fenders and other body panels are some of the tightest we've seen.  2002 beetle gl and gls models get a new wheel cover design. New 16-inch six-spoke wheels are available for gls models. For 2002, 1. 8 t models get the turbo badge and new 16-inch alloy wheels.  the new beetle has distinguished itself being among the safest of small cars. It has well-engineered crumple zones, dual frontal and side-impact airbags, and antilock brakes. interiorinside, the new beetle reflects elements of beetles past. Although truck space is small, the rear seats fold forward to increase cargo-carrying capacity.  the beetle features an unusual seating position. A huge dash area looms ahead of the driver. Now the windshield is steeply raked and has been moved several feet forward. The hood slopes so sharply downward that the driver cannot see it. The only thing visible outside the windshield is the road ahead.  the sweeping roofline creates tremendous front-seat headroom. That same roofline cramps people in back, however. Outside mirrors are mounted well forward of the driver, a better position than that of many other cars which mount them too close to the driver. Beefy front a-pillars (the post between the windshield and side window) impede vision in tight corners.  for some of us, it takes some adjustment to get used to the seating position and general ergonomics. Available seat heaters are adjustable and are a great feature.  a myriad of materials is used to give the beetle a high-tech look. The upper dash uses coarse, hard materials accented by smoother, softer surfaces elsewhere. Curved, dimpled door handles look ultra-modern. Upper door panels use a matte version of the car's exterior paint. The steering wheel features brushed aluminum spokes and carbon-fiber-looking handgrips. A small bud vase keeps a small flower looking fresh or holds a plastic daisy.  drivers will have few choices to make on the dealer lot, because beetles come loaded with air conditioning, power windows and sunroof, eight-speaker cd stereo system, power outlets for phones and laptops, and remote locking system. One of the few options is a dealer-installed smoker's package including ashtrays and lighter. A cruise control indicator light has been added for 2002. Also, the quality of the leatherette has been improved and can be added as a no-cost option.  a big speedometer and tiny tachometer are in a circular gauge panel that glows indigo at night. The gauges are attractive, but somewhat small and difficult to read. Red lighting is used for the stereo and heating/air conditioning controls to minimize glare at night. Sleek radio and heater controls are within easy reach. The stereo sounds good.  the glove box looks impressive, but its massive door belies the tiny, awkwardly shaped compartment. Other storage options are available, however: nets on the doors, a sunglasses compartment. One-touch power windows are a nice luxury feature, particularly at toll booths. But the rear windows do not open, so back-seat passengers can feel a little claustrophobic on summer days. Dual 12-volt power outlets and three cup holders make living with the new beetle convenient.  turbo s comes with special interior trim. The heated sport seats with leather trim and gray inserts are comfortable, though spare. Stainless steel pedals are perforated for a high-performance look and feel, and brushed-metal accents adorn the stick shift, steering wheel and glove box.  the bud vase, a now-classic sight in the beetle, has been updated for high-speed flower power in the turbo version where the vase is brushed steel. The upper dash, or cowl, uses coarse, hard materials accented by smoother, softer surfaces elsewhere. Curved, dimpled door handles look ultra-modern. Upper door panels use a matte version of the car's exterior paint. driving impressionbeetles offer excellent handling. The rigid chassis provides a smooth, controlled ride with little noise, vibration or harshness. Quick and accurate steering response, combined with good grip from the tires and a compliant suspension, help keep it firmly in contact with the road. The beetle is quite stable in high-speed sweeping turns and under hard braking. The suspension is firm enough for crisp handling, yet nicely damped to smooth out bumps and road vibration. Handling among the different beetle models is quite similar as the suspension is tuned to provide the same driving characteristics.  the difference lies chiefly in the engines. That's the way the original bugs were equipped and shifting gears is part of the driving fun. Torque from the base 2. 0-liter engine comes on at relatively low revs and makes the car feel quite sprightly around town. It is, in fact, one of the slowest cars on the road.  volkswagen's tdi diesel engine delivers solid small-car performance and fuel economy. Unlike most diesels and certainly unlike the original beetle, the engine runs remarkably smoothly and produces a diesel sound only at idle. The diesel also has a better feel to it. It's suited very well for everyday driving. Volkswagen builds some of the best small diesel engines in the world and this one is smooth, quiet and clean.  the 1. 8t versions add brisk acceleration performance to the equation. It lacks some response at the bottom of the rpm range, but once the revs are up it provides good acceleration performance. Step on the gas and the car begins to build momentum, then there's a whoosh of power. The beetle 1. 8t can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7. 5 seconds, a quite respectable performance.  the new turbo s model quickens the pace even further, into sports car territory. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Compared to the former generation silverado, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics.  the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers (rather than torsion bars) and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior features large switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky gloves.  the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  for 2008, all silverado models get brighter gauge needles for easier viewing in daylight, xm satellite radio with three months of complimentary service, and a power adjustable driver's seat is available for the 40/20/40 bench on regular cabs.  extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. The ltz cabin is available in three interior colors and, though it will show dirt faster, the lightest color gives the most luxurious impression.  on the other hand, the wt/lt version is more conventional truck with a more open floor area, space for junk all over, and no concerns that something might get scr.
